Why the Duke of York Has Surrendered His Royal Honors – and What It Means for the Monarchy
Through a statement issued via the royal household, Prince Andrew has declared he is giving up his official honors, including his dukedom. Here is an overview of what has been revealed – and what remains unchanged.
What Has Andrew Announced?
Having already withdrawn as a working royal in 2019, Andrew has currently chosen to “take additional measures” and agree not to use the “honor or the honours which have been conferred upon” him.
However, he employed the announcement to emphatically rejecting – as he has always done – the allegations of sexual impropriety leveled at him; even though after settling millions to settle the legal claim filed by Virginia Giuffre – an agreement in which he admitted no liability and strongly rejected all allegations of wrongdoing.
There has existed ongoing scrutiny toward the royal institution over the claims against Andrew – particularly after his ill-fated Newsnight interview with Emily Maitlis in 2019. He presently states he is acting to protect his relatives from further damage caused by public speculation.
Did the Monarch Removed Him of His Titles?
Not at all. And although this could be dismissed as a mere formality, it holds importance in two respects: first, it allows Andrew to openly state to have behaved with integrity in defence of the crown. As he said in his statement: “I have decided, consistent with my past, to put my duty to my family and the nation first.”
Second, while he has agreed to abstain from using it, Andrew retains his ducal title, along with the honors the Earl of Inverness and his barony and the esteemed position as a member of the prestigious order. Similar to the royal style honorific, they are effectively dormant.
He remains royalty and eighth in the line of succession. In theory, he is also a potential stand-in for the monarch – and may deputize for the sovereign if he is abroad or unwell. Although the palace has made clear that, in practice, he will not be called upon to fulfil this role.
Nonetheless, it is significant that Andrew’s statement said this choice was made “following talks with the king”. It appears little doubt that, privately, the palace advocated for the move in the hope of cutting Andrew loose.
Why Hasn’t He Formally Stripped of All of His Titles?
To revoke a dukedom would take an act of parliament, and would represent an unprecedented step in full view of the nation – it has not happened to a senior royal in more than 100 years – that it would likely cause more harm to the image for the royals.
Andrew is also still a prince. At his birth in 1960, he was automatically such as the son of a monarch. This could only be altered if a royal decree was issued by the king.

Although he stated his sister had been “justified” by the move, Giuffre’s brother Sky Roberts informed the Times that the prince's style should be revoked for “genuine accountability” to be achieved.
The republican campaign group Republic has also said the action is “too little, too late”, adding: “The prince continues to be accused of sexual misconduct and misuse of position. He should be divested of every honor and his military position and should face a criminal investigation. Not using archaic honors is not a punishment that matches the accusations.”
