A meter attendant and his wife have been arrested on suspicion of misappropriating over €1m out of the coin-operated meters of a small German town.

The unnamed city worker is believed to have removed coins from parking meters in the town on numerous occasions and deposited them in financial accounts that his spouse had access to, authorities stated in a statement.

A money laundering report by a credit institution notified authorities to the alleged theft. The parking inspector has been charged with numerous charges of theft, while his wife is charged with multiple counts of aiding and abetting the crime.

Kempten Mayor Thomas Kiechle expressed he was shocked and dismayed by the allegations.

In the fall, the Kempten legal authorities were notified that cash was repeatedly being deposited into multiple bank accounts, as reported by reports.

Police then raided work locations in the morning of November 24, the very day that a man in his forties and a 38-year-old woman were taken into custody.

They are now being held in separate jails.

It is uncertain how long it might have taken the couple to accumulate the amount.

In response to the allegations, Kiechle announced the formation of a commission to review previous procedures, uncover possible flaws, and effectively correct them for the coming years.

He noted that the names of the individuals could not currently be disclosed due to the ongoing investigation and privacy concerns.

In a written statement, Kiechle stated: "I naturally back the legal authorities and the law enforcement in their detailed investigation of the allegations."

"Until the case are resolved, the presumption of innocence applies," he continued.

Kempten is among the oldest towns in Germany. Situated in the country's south, it lies under the hills of the Allgäu and has approximately seventy thousand residents.
