The acclaimed police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh installment, announced by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-episode series created by the show's creator will begin filming in Belfast this spring, as confirmed by the production team.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, saying she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together next year."

The previous season concluded in 2021 with a finale that attracted over 17 million audience members. Speculation about a new season have been widespread for some time, but confirmation only arrived this week.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

The seventh season begins with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, according to production details.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue working to tackle corruption within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case to date."

New Character and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for busts of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to act as a offender.

Yet, this investigation might serve as a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still active in the background, the teaser hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio commented: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had so many fans track the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a new season."

He added: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston described being part of the series as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm so excited the show is back! Eager to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."

"Pleased with the news and anticipating those mercurial plot developments."

Show History

The drama launched in 2012 and became a highly successful television series of the last decade, featuring guest stars such as Lennie James.

The BBC has not yet announced exactly the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of season six brought the long-running storyline about the search for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team said at the time there were no intentions for further series.

However, the network confirmed on this week that a new season is now in development.
