Information Available Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack
At least 16 lives lost their lives and more than 40 sustained injuries when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police are describing as a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, officials have stated the death toll is 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were admitted to the hospital.
Those who died are yet to be publicly named, but authorities state their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.
Here are the individuals who are known to date.
Eli Schlanger
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Known as a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She told the events leading up to the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
In a statement, the Foreign Minister expressed that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message read.
One Child
A child who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was among those killed in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with five in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who responded to the attack.
One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Called a hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
