Condemnation Erupts as Trump's Post on Director Rob Reiner Draws Sharp Rebuke

Personalities from both sides of the political spectrum and the Hollywood industry are uniting to censure Donald Trump for his statements following the tragic passing of esteemed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

A Provocative Social Media Statement

After the couple were found deceased at their Brentwood residence, Trump posted on his platform to describe the late director as "anguished and struggling". In a message, he asserted Reiner's death was "because of the hostility he provoked others through his enormous, relentless, and untreatable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

The post then pivoted to self-praise, contrasting Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "unprecedented era of America".

Law Enforcement Update and Arrest

Police have since confirmed the arrest of the couple's adult son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in connection with the incident. Reports indicate his bail was set at a significant sum.

A Wave of Criticism from Celebrities and Politicians

The response to Trump's words was immediate and scathing.

“What a vile and despicable comment,” said actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly criticized the remarks. She pointed to prior rhetoric from Trump regarding the killing of an activist, asking, "Have you no shame? Can you get any worse?"

The state of California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply stated, "He is a sick man."

Echoing this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a contemptible piece of trash."

Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now implying the Reiners brought on their own demise because they didn’t support him. So sick."

Criticism from His Own Party

A number of Republican lawmakers also voiced dismay.

Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about politics or rivals". Greene also alluded to challenges with addiction and psychological well-being within families.

Fellow Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disrespectful" given the circumstances. He openly challenged others in his party to defend the comments.

The Director's History and Views on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a outspoken critic of Donald Trump. In a previous interview, he stated Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the presidency. He had also warned about the dangers of autocracy should Trump return to power.

"There is authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner noted. "If we crumble, there’s a risk that democracy crumble around the world."

Regardless of his pointed criticisms, Reiner had in the past shown "absolute horror" and denounced violence for political ends without reservation after the killing of a different individual.

A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal

Adding a layer of past connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had once recounted the story of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's request for "a specific hair product" while being photographed on a skyscraper with a view of Central Park.
