Adult Swim's Top New Show of 2025 Secures a Major Renewal for Two More Seasons.
Last October, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the channel unveiled a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. During a period often marked by bleakness, this show's earnestness found an audience and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Network Praise
Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who found the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about observing this lovable family navigate their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to evolve comedy past its prevailing cynical streak. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
What Comes Next
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially help usher in that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to experience the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
